From polio to prematurity, the Beauty Ball has evolved to raise funds that are used to protect the health of America’s children. From its founding 37 years ago, the event continues to support the programs of the March of Dimes to promote healthy pregnancies and, when something goes wrong, to help parents cope with premature births.

This year’s Beauty Ball, held at New York City’s Cipriani 42nd Street on March 13, honored Mindy Grossman, Chief Executive Officer of HSN, Inc. and Gina Sanders, President and Chief Executive Officer of Fairchild Fashion Media. The benefit was emceed by Deborah Norville, Anchor of Inside Edition.

“The Beauty Ball tonight honors two amazing doers,” Ms. Norville declared. “Mindy Grossman is the Retailer of the Year and Gina Sanders receives the Beautiful Apple Award.” John G. Ledes, who attended the fundraiser, was recognized as the Beauty Ball’s Founder.

“I began the Beauty Ball to get the cosmetic industry, instead of just one company, involved in a charitable event,” John Ledes explained. “The industry was enthusiastic about the benefit, and their response was immediate.”

Tony Little, the Founder of Health International Corporation and who is known as ‘America’s Personal Trainer,’ presented the Retailer of the Year Award to Ms. Grossman. Calling her an “amazing CEO,” Mr. Little said she is “strong, smart and has one gigantic heart. Mindy is the most caring CEO on the planet.”

“HSN’s commitment to supporting women is at the heart of everything we do,” Ms. Grossman shared. She described a recent visit with Ms. Sanders to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at New York Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital as “giving me a perspective on the miracle of life. [We saw] babies that were so small that it is difficult to comprehend how they exist. This experience made me aware of the fragility of life.”

Ms. Grossman announced that HSN Cares is initiating a cross-marketing campaign to raise “awareness and significant funds for the March of Dimes. The campaign will run on Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.” She also affirmed that HSN will match one bottle of prenatal vitamins for every dollar raised in this campaign.

The Beautiful Apple Award was presented to Ms. Sanders by Teen Vogue’s Editor In Chief, Amy Astley. “Gina was Publisher when we launched Teen Vogue, and she gave it tender loving care. Gina is the ultimate ‘Momma Bear.’ She is a loving wife, mother and daughter. It is so fitting that Gina receives this award.”

Ms. Sanders expressed her gratitude at sharing the stage with her fellow honoree and being introduced by “my colleague and great friend.” She also spoke of her visit to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit where she saw four premature children being sustained by “some of the millions of dollars raised by the March of Dimes.” Ms. Sanders acknowledged her husband Steven Newhouse and her two children as well as “my extended family at Condé Nast.” Congratulating the March of Dimes’ 37th anniversary, she agreed to be the Chairman of next year’s Beauty Ball.

The evening came to a financially dazzling conclusion with the auction conducted by Phillips de Pury & Company’s Auctioneer, CK Swett. With a kick-off donation of $10,000 by CHANEL, enthusiastic bidders, who were touched by the March of Dimes’ Fund the Mission, pledged $109,000 to push the final total raised to $1.13 million.
