Olfactory Expressions

According to The NPD Group, certain areas of the fragrance market are resonating with consumers in spite of the challenging economic climate. “Smaller sizes are becoming an increasingly important option today,” explained Karen Grant, Vice President and Global Industry Analyst at The NPD Group. “What’s encouraging is that they are not just working in women’s scents or new fragrances…we are also seeing growth in smaller sizes for both women’s and men’s fragrances—one ounce and smaller—and classics, as well as new scents.”

According to The NPD Group, in annual 2009, women’s fragrance juices under one ounce grew 8% in units versus 2006. Looking at new SKUs in 2009, growth came from new items like the Harajuku Lovers Snow Bunnies as well as existing SKUs such as Esteé Lauder Beautiful and Esteé Lauder pleasures. For men, growth came in new one ounce SKUs like Polo Blue and Polo Black.

“Smaller sizes are a great way for consumers to get a taste of what’s new or to remember a loved, favorite scent,”
Ms. Grant continued. “This could be not only a thoughtful option, but a budget-friendly one for gift giving.”

ETERNITY summer is introduced by Coty Prestige.

Sun and sand resonate at the dawn of a summer’s day. The mood is captured in ETERNITY summer 2010, a cool, fresh and serene scent.

The juice opens with a top note of grapefruit, ginger and passion flower. Its middle note of pink peony, freesia and muguet is based on a drydown of creamy musks, white amber and driftwood. It is presented in the signature ETERNITY flacon, which has been newly interpreted, along with the carton, with an image of ocean waves lightly enveloping the sand. The soft pink and lavender color palette of the packaging mimics the light at sunrise.

Bare Skin was the first to roll out in the limited-edition Leslie Blodgett Perfume Diaries.

Leslie Blodgett, the iconic beauty visionary behind Bare Escentuals and who ignited the
mineral makeup phenomenon, has now put her creative stamp on fragrances. Ms. Blodgett has launched her Perfume Diaries. They were created exclusively for Sephora, and Maesa Group was chosen to metaphorically author Ms. Blodgett’s scentiments.

Leslie Blodgett’s Perfume Diaries is a limited-edition fragrance collection that revisits and evokes pivotal moments in Ms. Blodgett’s life. Having kept journals since she was a young girl, she has captured the essence of every trip she’s taken in those pages.

The first limited-edition fragrance collection in the Leslie Blodgett Perfume Diaries is Bare Skin, which launched on October 8, 2009. Developed by Sephora, the juice begins on a top note of black pepper, freesia and anise. Its heart of iris, vanilla orchid, plumeria and patchouli dries down to sandalwood, labdanum and musk. It is presented in packaging manufactured by Maesa Beauty, which supplied a turnkey finished good to Sephora.

Maesa crafted a custom glass vessel for the Eau de Parfum, which was decorated with a one pass gradient spray, 360 degree silkscreen with a hand-applied label wrapping from front to back. “This extremely unique and difficult decoration can only be achieved by a handful of decorators in the world,” explained Rod Hough, Director Package Development at Maesa Beauty. The glass is topped with a 2-piece, custom zamac design that is powder-coated and tumbled to give it an antique feel. The Solid Perfume presentation was inspired by a traditional timepiece of Ms. Blodgett’s. Its 5-piece, custom zamac design was powder-coated and tumbled to give it an antique look.

The Leslie Blodgett Perfume Diaries’ Santa Barbara collection

The Leslie Blodgett Perfume Diaries Bare Skin in a 1.7 oz. Eau de Parfum, .07 oz. Solid Fragrance Compact and 4.2 oz. Perfumed Body Cream are priced at $55.00, $35.00 and $30.00 respectively.

On February 15, the Santa Barbara collection in The Leslie Blodgett Perfume Diaries was launched. The juice, developed by Sephora, consists of pepper, lemon, cassis and peach at the top blended with iris, jasmine and lily of the valley at the heart and based on moss, musk, cedarwood, patchouli and benzoin. Maesa crafted a custom glass vessel for the Santa Barbara Eau de Parfum flacon as it did with the Bare Skin collection. The Solid Perfume Compact is also in the form of a timepiece belonging to Ms. Blodgett. The Rollerball has a full wrap transparent label with gradation to achieve the same look as the Eau de Parfum’s bottle.

The Leslie Blodgett Perfume Diaries Santa Barbara collection includes a 1.7 oz. Eau de Parfum for $55.00, .07 oz. Solid Perfume Compact, $35.00 and a .33 oz. Rollerball, $16.00.

Rose Oud from the Arabian Nights by Kilian collection

Oud, a rare and precious oil found in agarwood from the aquilaria tree in Southeast Asia is the centerpiece of the new Arabian Nights by Kilian collection. Kilian, heir to a long line of Cognac-makers and the grandson of a founder of the LVMH Group, trained at prestigious
perfume houses before starting his eponymous fragrance collection.

Pure Oud by Kilian was developed by Givaudan’s Perfumer Calice Becker who layered oud’s oil with papyrus oil, guaiac wood oil, copahu balm and saffron oil.

For Rose Oud, Ms. Becker combined oud with Turkish rose petals.
